The sign which has been recently erected to mark the location of the Old Florence Cemtery. The cemetery is in the clump of trees in the background.
History: Old Florence was once a community of a Presbyterian Church and cemetery, approximately 4 acres which was part of the Kirby place. It is not known if the land was donated by the Kirby's but it is now property of Presbyterians in Monticello, Ark.
The church was taken apart and moved to New Florence with (sic) is approximately 4 miles West about 1890. There was a black cemetery adjoining the white which was fenced into a pasture by Richard Pittman, son-in-law of Mr. Kirby. The headstones were eventually destroyed. It was thought to be a slave cemetery. This was told to Mrs. V. G. Moore by Ruth Posey Smith who lived near old Florence in her young years.
