A much-loved husband, father and grandfather, Earl Rubin Littlejohn, 83, of Hot Springs, Arkansas passed away peacefully on September 28, 2013. He was born on September 25, 1930 to Felix and Naomi Curtis Littlejohn in Stilwell, Oklahoma. He together with his twin brother grew up on their family cattle ranch. In 1948, he graduated from Stilwell High School. Subsequently, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. While on reserve in the USMC, he accepted a football scholarship to Taft College in California majoring in engineering. He was then recalled to active duty along with his comrades to serve his country in the Korean War. Upon conclusion of the war, Earl heeded the advice from his commanding captain to enter the field of landscape architecture. He later went on to receive a degree in Landscape Architecture from Oklahoma State University in 1957. Consequent to graduation, he began his profession as a Landscape Architect for the United States Forest Service, Department of Agriculture. Over a career that spanned more than 50 years, he served on national forests in California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Arkansas. He was a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects serving on the board of trustees. Moreover, he was a member of the scholastic honor society, Sigma Lambda Alpha, recognizing academic achievement in the field of Landscape Architecture. Because of his professional stature, then-Governor David Pryor appointed him to serve on the first Arkansas Advisory Committee for Registration of Landscape Architects. The final five years of this appointment he was elected chair. Earl’s career came full circle in 1990 as his alma mater, Oklahoma State University, recognized him as an outstanding Landscape Architecture Alumni honoree with the Distinguished Landscape Architecture Graduate Award. Furthermore, having exceptional contributions over an extended period of time, he was presented with the Distinguished Pioneer Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Be that as it may, he considered the greatest achievement bestowed upon him to be the designation of Fellow from the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is survived by his wife Frankie Littlejohn of 53 years; his daughter, Liz Littlejohn Raney of Little Rock; his son, Chris McKnight of Huntsville; his grandchildren, Abby and Thomas Raney of Little Rock, Donovan (Elizabeth) McKnight of Springdale, and Keith McKnight of Oregon. Visitation will be held at 12:00 on Friday, October 4 at The Church of Christ on Airport Road in Hot Springs with the funeral service following at 1:00. Interment with full military honors will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. Pallbearers include Thomas Raney, Donovan McKnight, Harry Childs, Lowell Gadberry, Charley Pate and Larry Nibert. The family wishes to convey special thanks to the staff of Mercy Hospital and Arkansas Hospice for their graciousness during his transition. Memorial donations are requested to be made to The Church of Christ Landscape Design Fund at 948 Airport Road – Hot Springs, Arkansas 71913.
