Gary Merle Johnston age 76, of Romance died December 9, 2017 in Searcy at Unity Hospital. He was born September 15, 1941 in Beebe, Arkansas to Vollie and Oleta (Heggie) Johnston.

He was a multi-talented man who enjoyed bowling, fishing, get togethers, and helping others. He retired from the Army National Guard as a Master Sergeant with 30 years of service, as well as, Vickers with 34 years of service. He was a volunteer member of the Floyd/Romance Fire Department where he served as the Safety Manager. He also was a Master Electrician, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Center Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley (Stewart) Johnston of Romance; two daughters Melissa Allison (Jeff) of Maumelle and Leslee McCoy (Gene) of Fulton, Missouri; five grandchildren Collin Brown, Sydney Morriss (Matt), Caden Brown, Drennen Whitehair, and Kailee McCoy; four sisters Shirley Ann Rogers (J.P.), Pam Roy (Jim), Rita Byrd (Johnny), and Bettie Johnston. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers W.L. Johnston and Johnny Johnston; sisters Nina Lester, Barbara Maynard, and Peggy Ferrell.

A special thank you to CCU, 4 South, 3 East of Unity Hospital. To all the personnel that was so kind and helpful, as well as, Dr. Jayton Lim, Dr. Bradley Hughes, Dr. Greg Barden, and Dr Anupama Kaul for all their special care.

He was a wonderfully kind man of God who always tried to put others first. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 13 from 1-2 P.M. Funeral Service will follow at 2 P.M. at Roller-Daniel Funeral home in Searcy, Arkansas. Interment will be at Harmony Methodist Cemetery.
