Mary Ellen Simpson, 87, a longtime resident of Searcy, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2013. She was born Jan. 21, 1926, in Griffithville to the late Jessie C. and Ellen Voiles Huff.
Ms. Simpson worked at Birdseye factory for many years. After she retired Mary and her husband, Al enjoyed scouring the county meeting new people and finding the best yard sales. She had a knack for finding great deals and reselling them in her booth at Thackerland Flea Market; she was the original "American Picker."
She is survived by one grandson, Steven Martin; two granddaughters, Theressa Mandrell and Tammy (Jerry) Herman; one brother, Ray Huff of Dodgeville, Michigan; two sisters, Doris Masters of Bullhead City, Ariz. and Catherine Hopson of Russell; 8 grandchildren, Renee Reed, Kyle Brooks, Kendra Martin, Kristen Mobley, Jonathon Mandrell, Caitlyn Mandrell, Justin Herman and Mandi Martin; four great-grandchildren, Pearce Mobley, Tyler Mobley, Rylan Reed and David Martin.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert Simpson; one daughter, Pat Martin.
Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 p.m. Services will be conducted Tuesday, 2 p.m., Powell Funeral Home Chapel in Bald Knob. Interment will follow in Harmony Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Powell Funeral Home Bald Knob-Judsonia. www.powellfuneralhome.net.
