October 20, 1924 - March 13, 2017
Thomas Jason Hignight, 92, lifelong resident of Red Oak Community, passed away March 13, 2017. He was born October 20, 1924, to the late Creed and Lucy (Jones) Hignight. Jason loved to tell people he was born under lake between today’s Caroline Acres and the fish hatchery on the South edge of Lake Hamilton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 54 years, Clarace Marie Otwell Hignight; and siblings, Margaret Lange and Neland Hignight.
Survivors are his children, La Nelle Warren (Darrell) of Fourche Loupe Community, Garland County, Tommy Hignight (Rosa) of Austin, Arkansas, Steve Hignight (Gayle) of Prairie Grove, Arkansas; sisters, Luvenia Rushing of California, Vivian Mulholland of Virginia; brother, Michael Hignight of Florida; grandchildren, Tyrone Warren, Jeremy Hignight, Jeff Hignight, Jason Hignight, Ben Hignight, Dan Hignight; granddaughter, Tonia Sluppick, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Jason began reading and studying the Bible by coal oil lamp at an early age, a lifelong habit that was only broken by poor eyesight. He was a very active member of Red Oak Missionary Baptist Church, holding many positions until his health interrupted his mobility to attend worship services.
Jason, at the age of 21, returned home from WWII service as a bombardier in the Navy. He was proud of his service for his country. Upon being discharged from service, he was awarded the American Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He then went to work at Newberry’s Department Store for two years before purchasing his father’s dairy farm in the Red Oak Community, where he remained until 2017. He was one of the founding members of the Garland County Farmers Association. After running the dairy for ten years he changed to Red Angus Beef Cattle and began a career as a building contractor, demonstrating his skills as a master carpenter.
Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.
A celebration of Jason’s life will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Red Oak Missionary Baptist Church, Highway 290, with Pastor Joe Bob Smith and Bro. Herbert Watts officiating.
Interment will be at Fourche Loupe Cemetery.
