Storm Hammond Whaley, a leading figure at the National Institutes of Health under five U.S. Presidents, and a former acting president of the University of Arkansas, has died at age 95. Whaley, who was also a well-known broadcaster in Arkansas in the 1930s and 1940s, died Sept. 18 in San Diego, California, where he and his wife of 75 years, Jane Bucy Whaley, moved in 2005. Born March 15, 1916, in Sulphur Springs, Ark., Whaley was the son of Storm Onus Whaley and Mabel Etta (Prater) Whaley. He is survived by his wife and his daughters, Carroll Jean Anderson and her husband Daniel Stonewall Anderson of San Diego; Ann Marie Whaley and her husband Stanley Phillip Adams of London, England; and Rebecca Glenn Whaley of Little Rock. In addition he is survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jane Bucy Whaley, born September 5, 1915, in Roswell, New Mexico, died January 20, 2014, in La Jolla, California. She was the daughter of Holly Kinsinger Bucy and William Carrol Bucy. She grew up in Muleshoe, Texas and earned a B.A. from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1935. Jane met her husband Storm at JBU while working in the College Bank and Savings Corporation, which provided the only banking service in Siloam Springs during the time of widespread bank failures. In addition to raising her family, Jane worked with the Girl Scouts in Northwest Arkansas and in Little Rock. She was a member of PEO. A keen gardener, Jane built a museum-quality doll house and decorated it with a fine collection of miniatures. She studied Mandarin Chinese at the University of Arkansas. As Jane started helping to raise her grandchildren, she also began a new career at the Chevy Chase Bank in Bethesda, Maryland. She worked there for 30 years, until she was 88 years old. Jane was honored as the Mature Worker of the Year in Montgomery County, Maryland in 2000.
In 2005, Jane and Storm moved to La Jolla where they were living when Storm died in 2011. Jane and Storm have three daughters, Carroll Jean, Ann Marie and Rebecca Glenn, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
