Mildred Beatrice Maddox was born June 12, 1937, to the late Levi Hollins and Minnie Dixon-Hollins in Mer Rouge, LA. Mildred was the youngest daughter of nine siblings born to this union.
Mildred was a graduate of Union High School, Mer Rouge, LA. After high school, she continue her education as a registered nurse at Southern State College (SAU-Magnolia). She worked as a nurse for over thirty years at Union County Health Department. She was loved and respected by her co-workers and colleagues. Over her life span she worked with several organizations and companies in Louisiana and Arkansas.
Mildred confessed in her heart a hope and strong belief in Christ at an early age. She was baptized at St. Matthews Baptist Church II in Mer Rouge, LA. She was a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church and served in too many to mention auxiliaries. She later united with First St. James Missionary Baptist Church and continued to serve faithfully under the leadership of her beloved pastor and son in the ministry Rev. Roy C. Aaron Jr. She loved both of her church families. Her joy and delight was to sing songs of praise with the Golden Pioneers Choir, under the direction of her beloved surrogate daughter Leading Lady Felisha Aaron. Mildred served as president of the missionary department, teacher and deaconess. She was mother to all of her church family (especially the children). Mildred was a theologian of the word. She traveled all over the country with the National Baptist Convention/Congress USA, Inc. She held both local and state positions.
During her journey of life, Mildred was a member of many organizations. She received recognition by The State of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee (Governor) in 2005 congratulating her on the celebration of retirement after nearly 30 years of dedicated services to the Arkansas Department of Health as RN, PHN II, Clinic Coordinator. Mildred received recognition of services from Bill Clinton, 42nd President of the United States. In 2006, Mildred received recognition as “Person of the Year Award” from The Concerned Christian Organization, Rev. Richard L. Howard, D.D (President). Mildred was a member Derrick City Temple Number 352 (IBPOEW). She was presented the Clarence A. Jenkins “Humanitarian Award” for outstanding serviced rendered to the community, city and state. She was recognized as Dtr. Mildred Maddox, “Daughter Elk of The Year” for outstanding participation in community and civic service. Mildred received both national and state honors. She served as state and local Chaplin for many years, gatekeeper, and trustee. Mildred worked diligently as a director of many departments. Her wisdom and knowledge was everlasting and will be greatly missed by the organization.
Mother our first loved: She was clothed with strength and dignity; She would laugh at the day to come. She spoke with wisdom and faithful instruction was on her tongue. She watched over the affairs of our household and did not eat the bread of idleness. We her children arise and called her blessed; her husband also, and he praised her. Many women do noble things, but our mother surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty if fleeting; but our Mother who feared the Lord, lived a vibrant life of praised to carry on.
Our priceless and precious Queen loved and respected her husband, nurture her children, grand and great grandchildren. She educated us all, including nieces, nephews, and strangers both mentally and financially. Her heart was large. She helped anyone in need. People loved being in her presence, home and circle because our beautiful Mother welcomed everyone without judgement (not to mention she was a great cook, loved fellowship with friends through sports and bingo). Her beauty was inside/out and rare. She gave her first to the church, family, friends, and community. Her belief…Salvation is free…all it encompass is confess with your mouth, believe in your heart that Jesus died for our sins. She was our example of persistence, courage, services, faith, hope, love of life and the ongoing quest for truth. We love you Mildred B. Maddox! Thank you for giving us the freedom and space to dream. Thank you for teaching us compassion and forgiveness. “Mother” you were our rock, our anchor and our true love! Fly high our beloved Angel. You earned your Wings!
Mildred was preceded in death by her beloved husband James Ezekiel Maddox; one son, Dennis Ray Maddox; two daughters, Gwendolyn Shrone Jones; Tina Delois Maddox; one sister, Dorothy Harris; three brothers, Howard Hollins, Hayward Hollins, Timothy Hollins and cherished son-in-law Michael Eaglin.
Mildred is survived by one brother; Levi Hollins Jr.(Mae) (Las Vegas, Nevada); and three sisters, Naomi Johnson (Clearwater, Fl); Gladys Williams (Bastrop, LA), Annie Mae Johnson (Chicago, IL)
Mildred leaves to cherish her memories; three daughters, Georgia Maddox-Hay (El Dorado, AR), Shirley Maddox-Stubbs (Jerry) Woodbridge, VA, Samantha Maddox-Eaglin (Woodbridge, VA); two surrogate daughters, Karen Wilson (Randall)- El Dorado, AR, Belinda Hall-Boone (Mark)- El Dorado, AR; one beloved surrogate son John L. Hay. She also leaves her pride and joy a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, beloved neighbors, and friends.
Grave side service Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at 2:30pm at Lott Burgy Cemetery under the direction of Sims Mortuary. Repass will be at First St. James Missionary Baptist Church. (outside fellowship) mask required. Practice social distancing. Respect the wishes of the bereaved family.
The family would like to thank you for your spiritual and emotional strength as we grieve our mother and sister passing. It was a great comfort to receive your cards, flowers, contributions, phone calls at this sad time. We lend our gratitude to our church family First St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Sims Mortuary, and countless others. Your kindness, and support to our family during this celebration of life.
