Earl Ellis Smith of Searcy, Arkansas, died late in the evening of November 29, 2018. He was at home in the caring company of his two youngest sons when he passed on to join his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Oletus Faye Smith.

Earl is survived by seven children: Samuel Earl Smith of Austin, Arkansas; Charles Raymond Smith of Roland, Arkansas; Alan Keith Smith of Little Rock, Arkansas; John Terry (Jack) Smith of McRae, Arkansas; Kenneth Ellis Smith of Searcy, Arkansas; Loré Ann (Smith) Tirado of Lusk, Wyoming; and Pamela Sue (Smith) Angerman of Searcy, Arkansas. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Earl’s three sisters—Bethel Balogac, Dorma Jean Potts, and Elsie Nakatsu - preceded him in passing.

On September 14, 1932, Earl was born in Chester, West Virginia, to Helen (Lyons) and Raymond O. Smith. After a childhood playing in the hills along the Ohio River, he set out to see the world as a teenager. In late 1951, while in Colorado, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He met a lovely young lady named Oletus Faye Hallford while on temporary duty in Tempe, Arizona. They were married on February 3, 1952. He went on to serve honorably for twenty-one years before retiring to Searcy, Arkansas in 1972 where he continued his education at Harding University.

Earl was a kind and humble Christian man who made it a mission to entertain and instruct (by both word and deed) his children, his grandchildren, and most of the neighborhood children for blocks around. He loved to sing “those good old hymns” with family and friends, and he had a fondness and a knack for the English language. He spent many happy hours working cross-word puzzles and writing his award-winning poems—some humorous, some inspirational, but all of them honest, insightful, and wise. He had a true passion for words and, even more, for the Word, reading and studying his Bible daily. Forty-five years a member of the Four Mile Hill Church of Christ, Earl was ever-charitable in thought and ever-generous in action—always eager to help a soul in need, and he only ever asked one thing in return: “Now go do something good for someone else.” May we all honor him in answering that call.

A Graveside service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Honey Hill Cemetery in Searcy

*Obituary

Oletus Faye Smith, age 81, of Searcy, Arkansas, died February 16, 2014 after a bravely fought battle with cancer. Faye, the loving wife of Earl Ellis Smith, slipped peacefully away at the Hospice Home Care inpatient facility in Little Rock, Arkansas, surrounded by the love of her family.

Faye is survived by her husband, Earl, by her sister, Ledora Evelyn (Hallford) Scardigilli, and by her three brothers: Vaden Julius Hallford, Morris Franklin Hallford, and Delbert Wayne Hallford. Her sister, Julia Ann (Hallford) Russell, preceded her in passing. Faye is also survived by her seven children: Samuel Earl Smith of Austin, Arkansas; Charles Raymond Smith of Roland, Arkansas; Alan Keith Smith of Little Rock, Arkansas; John Terry (Jack) Smith of McRae, Arkansas; Kenneth Ellis Smith of Searcy, Arkansas; Loré Ann (Smith) Tirado of Lusk, Wyoming; and Pamela Sue (Smith) Angerman of Bald Knob, Arkansas. Thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive Faye's passing.

Born in Peacock, Texas, on January 6, 1933, to Rodney J. and Winnie Ledora (Dozier) Hallford, Faye moved west with her family to settle in Arizona where she would spend her childhood years, blossoming into a beautiful young woman and graduating from Tempe Union High School in 1951. On February 3, 1952, Faye married Earl Smith, embarking on a sixty-two year mission of Christian service as an ever loving, ever generous, and ever patient wife and mother. It takes a strong woman to raise seven children, and Faye rose to that challenge unfailingly. She was blessed with a strong and independent spirit: when there was a job to be done, she would do it—her way. She loved to do things her own way, which, in her wisdom, was most often the right way. Faye also cherished times of quiet solitude, yet she was always there for anyone who needed her, always ready to listen or lend a hand of help.

A member of the Four Mile Hill Church of Christ, Faye was the epitome of the model set down in Proverbs 31—truly a good wife and a virtuous woman to be valued far beyond any earthly treasure. She was a shining example of goodness and charity to all who knew her. That loving light will be sorely missed.
