Charles Vernon Hughes, age 94, of Winslow, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2020, at Willard Walker Hospice Home in Fayetteville. He was born in 1926 in White House Community, Arkansas, to Wyth A. and Mary Bell (Watkins) Hughes. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Hughes; son, Jesse Dale Hughes; daughter, Jeanette Michelle Panoke; and four brothers, Oscar (Audrey) Hughes, Eugene (Ann) Hughes, Ted (Agnes) Hughes and Homer (Lily May) Hughes.

Charles was an extremely hard worker. After leaving the U. S. Air Force he worked tirelessly for years to buy a family farm. Charles and Virginia owned Hughes Greenhouses for over 40 years, along with baskets of beautiful flowers they also farmed some of the most sought-after tomatoes in the area. Charles was well known on the Dallas farmers market, Springdale farmers market and local stores for being honest, reliable, and fair. Often being called “the honest tomato man from Arkansas”. After “retiring” from the greenhouses, he continued with tomatoes and cattle. Wanting to put out another patch of tomatoes right up till his 94th birthday.

To his family he was a pillar of strength, kind, funny, hardworking, and generous. He loved family gatherings, joking around, playing Skip-Bo, teasing the kids, and telling amazing vibrant stories you never tired of hearing. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, education, honesty, keeping your word and loving your family. He loved to sit out on his front porch and talk to anyone who came by. He never knew a stranger, always quick with a knee slapping joke. He loved a good prank, like asking someone to pick up wheelbarrow steering fluid, wheelbarrow seeds and the best advice... “Don’t take any wooden nickels but get all the wooden quarters you can.”

He is survived by his daughter, Vickie (Georgie) Henson; one brother, Ray (Billie Sue) Hughes; three grandchildren, Tina (Stephen) Mirabella, Travis Hughes, and Charles (Nikki) Henson; and eight great-grandchildren, Kirsten Mirabella, Kaleb Mirabella, Karter Henson, Joshua Hughes, Kenny Hughes, Marshall Hughes, Dillon Hughes and Yizabella Hughes.

The family cannot imagine a day without him, his laughter, abundance of love and warmth. We feel truly blessed in this life to have all the memories we have and will continue our lives with the lessons he taught us. He was truly “One in a million”.

The family would like to thank Northwest Medical Center of Springdale and Willard Walker Hospice for taking such great care of him.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00am on Monday, June 29, 2020, at Moore’s Chapel Funeral Home in Fayetteville with a funeral service to follow at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Brentwood Cemetery in Winslow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Willard Walker Hospice Home at https://www.wregional.com/hospice/willard-walker-hospice-home.
