James U. (J.U.) Phipps Jr. 57, of Lowell, died Monday at a Springdale hospital. Born June 17, 1920 at Frazier, Ark., the son of James U. Phipps Sr. and Alma Rhea Duncan Phipps, he was a retired employee of Shipley Baking Co., a veteran of World War II, and a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Hammack Phipps of the home; one son, James Michael, of Artesia, N.M.; one daughter, Mrs. John (Judy) Van Curen of Springdale; one brother, Bill of Fayetteville; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Parker and Mrs. Clydean Christian, both of Fayetteville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Moore's Chapel with burial in Brentwood Cemetery.
