FAYETTEVILLE — Xavier Joseph "Joe" Musacchia of Fayetteville died peacefully at his home on Aug. 6, 2014, in the company of his children.

Born Feb. 11, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was called to active duty in 1943. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater, earning an Honorable Discharge in December of 1945.

He enrolled in graduate school at Fordham University in New York in 1946 earning his M.S. and Ph.D. in comparative and environmental physiology. In a career spanning more than 50 years, he held professorships at St. Louis University and the University of Missouri at Columbia in physiology.

He became vice provost for research at the University of Missouri, later becoming the dean of the graduate school. He was the university provost for research affairs at the University of Louisville, retiring in 1991, and remained professor emeritus of physiology and biophysics.

Joe was an active member of his parish churches, serving on parish councils and in the Eucharistic ministry. He moved from Bella Vista, Ark., to Butterfield Trail Village in Fayetteville, Ark., in 2004.

He married Betty Cook in 1950 and shared 58 years of marriage. Joe and Betty enjoyed art, music and opera, and had a love for lifelong learning. They traveled to many countries as part of his research and academic career as well as for pleasure.

Betty preceded Joe in death in December of 2008. Also preceding him were his parents, Orsolina and Castrense Musacchia; his sisters, Mary, Lucy and Adelaide.

Joe is survived by his four children and their spouses, Joseph (Khorshed), Mary (Jim), Thomas (Polly) and Laura (Loren).

Beloved grandfather of Stephen, Malinda, Thomas, Joseph, Michael, Sara, Matthew and Nathan.

Dad you taught us well and you will live on in our hearts. You will be missed.

Mass will be offered on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1722 N. Starr Drive, Fayetteville, Ark.

Following the mass, a private memorial service for family will be held at the gravesite.

Arrangements by Epting Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
