Walter L "WL" DAVIS,

Lamar Cemetery
Johnson County,
Arkansas

January 27, 1919 - November 19, 2014

Walter (W.L.) Davis, Jr., 95, of Clarksville was born January 27, 1919, and went on to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at the River Valley Hospice Home in Russellville. He was a member of the Lamar Baptist Church.

He leaves his loving wife of 75 years, Frances Sparks Davis; children, C.L. Davis and Sharon of Russellville, Thomas E. Davis and Lou of Lamar, Samuel W. Davis and Alice of Lamar, J.R. Davis and Renee of Russellville, Kathy Davis of Washington, Michigan, Mary and Mel Blaylock of London, George Davis and Chrissy of Ola, and Tanya McKinney of Clarksville; 28 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom adored him.

Mr. Davis was born and raised in Johnson County where he lived most of his life one-fourth of a mile from where he was born. The son of Walter Davis Sr. and Virgie May (Sims) Davis and Mary (Barham) Davis, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Williams, and two brothers, Lawrence and Charlie Davis, a son, Larry L. Davis, a grandson, Matthew Davis, and two son-in-laws, Don Metz and David McKinney.

Mr. Davis was blessed to lead a long and productive life. He was active right up until his last battle with illness. After graduating from Lamar High School, he worked in the wheat fields in South Dakota and Kansas helping out with the war effort while in South Dakota. In 1942, he worked at Home Oil Service in Sikeston, Missouri for about a year before returning to Johnson County to farm. While farming, he also worked for Eureka Brick and Tile off and on for several years. His farming consisted of a peach orchard, row crops, cattle, hogs, and a commercial egg production farm.

Along with his love of family, he also had a love for animals and always had a story to tell. He was interested in Tennessee Walking Horses, training bird dogs and was an avid bird hunter.

Mr. Davis had an appetite for knowledge and was a life-long learner. He taught his family the value of family, faith, hardwork, loyalty, and standing up for what you believe in. He will be greatly missed.

Services will be under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 23, from 2-4:00 p.m., at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel in Clarksville. The funeral will be held Monday, November 24, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at the Lamar Baptist Church with Reverend Clyde Vire officiating. Burial will be in the Lamar Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the sons of Mr. Davis, along with his nephew, Bill Sparks. Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and Robert Thurlby.
