Long time Mountain Home, AR resident Angela (Dell) Raabe passed away peacefully on Friday August 5, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ at the age of 99½. Born January 13, 1917 Dell was one of six children of Anna and Vaso Bubonovich of Hammond, IN.

Dell attended Hammond High School and graduated in 1935. She was very active with many interests including the National Honor Society, swimming and various sports. Her activity in Junior Red Cross led to her lifelong profession and military service during WWII as a registered nurse. After High School she attended St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing in Hammond, IN and graduated as a registered nurse in 1938. She continued her education with post graduate studies in obstetrics at the Women's Hospital in New York City and completed the program in 1940. This was followed by another year as a post-partum charge nurse. She enlisted in the US Army Nurse Corps and was sent to Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN where she served as a Second Lieutenant from 1941-1942. After her engagement to be married, she resigned from the Army and received an honorable discharge. Angela married Jack George Raabe of Gary, IN on July 6, 1942 in Augusta, GA while Jack was stationed at Fort Benning, GA as a flight instructor with the U.S. Air Force.

Following the end of WWII Angela continued to work as a registered nurse while her husband Jack was actively serving as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force or as a flight instructor on contract with the U.S. Government. Her care-giving passion continued well into her retirement years and continued after relocating to Mountain Home as a Red Cross volunteer through Baxter Regional Medical Center and with Hospice of the Ozarks.

It was through her husband, Jack, that Dell began the fascinating second chapter of her life as a pilot. Her husband was in great need of a dependable co-pilot while flying a private corporate plane for The Weston Paper and Manufacturing Company of Terre Haute, IN. Dell learned how to fly and in 1966 soloed at the age of 49 and obtained her private license. She passed her multi-engine rating in a Twin Beech airplane in 1967, her instrument rating in 1968 and her commercial pilot license in 1969. In 1967 she joined the international women's pilot group, The Ninety-Nine's, dedicated to the mutual support and advancement of women in aviation. Dell continued to fly as Jack's co-pilot from 1967-1973.

In 1973 they relocated to Naples, FL where Dell worked as an RN at Naples Community Hospital until her retirement in 1982. Her childhood interest in swimming continued throughout her life and into retirement in Florida where she was a member of the neighborhood women's synchronized swimming group, the "Doll Fins". She enjoyed doing arts and crafts, boating and ocean fishing.

Jack and Dell moved to Mountain Home in 1990 to be centrally located to their children and near a locale with good boating and fishing access. She was active in the St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church. Following a fall in 2009, Angela moved to Chicago, IL to be closer to family. In 2014 she moved to Phoenix, AZ near her son Donn, his wife Carol and their daughter Lisa.

Angela is the mother of three surviving children and their families: son Donn Raabe with daughter in-law Carol and daughter Lisa Smith of Phoenix, AZ; daughter Paulette Raabe of Spring, TX; and daughter Sallie DeGroff with son in-law Timothy of Carr, CO.

Dell was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Jack Raabe; brothers Paul and Tom; and sisters, Ann, Josephine and Pauline.

A small private memorial will be held for family members on Sept. 14th, 2016 in Mountain Home at the Roller Funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Angela Raabe's name to either the American Red Cross, The Hospice of the Ozarks or to St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Roller Funeral Home.
