BELLA VISTA — Catharine (Kay) Louise Sokol, 94, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at Presbyterian Manor in Fulton, Mo. She was born on June 28, 1920, in Rembrandt, Iowa, to Louis F. Pingel and Jennie McQuillin Pingel.
Kay grew up in Iowa, and graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. While there, she met George O. Sokol who would become her husband of 65 years.
Kay and George spent the next twenty years in various towns in Iowa. They then moved to Tulsa, Okla., where they lived for over twenty years. Eventually, they retired to Bella Vista, Ark.
Through the years Kay's interests included spending time at their cabin at Grand Lake, Okla., traveling, reading, and visiting family. Kay was a member of the Bella Vista Community Church, and loved those in her Christ Care Group. She was also a member of the Art Club and Republic Women's Club.
Painting was a special talent and enjoyment for Kay. She and her husband, as well as good friends Keith and Vivian Nielsen, began a successful greeting card business. Kay would paint the cover pictures and Vivian would write the messages inside. They enjoyed traveling all around selling their cards. She had a full life and was happiest being with family and friends. Her kind nature and caring spirit will be what is missed most.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George O. Sokol, and one sister, Enid Holle.
She is survived by one son, Steven Sokol and wife, Kumiko of Gold River, Calif., three daughters, Barbara Sokol of Decorah, Iowa, Janie Sokol of Bella Vista, Ark., and Laurie Davis of Fulton, Mo.; six grandchildren: Sunny Sokol, Fayetteville, Ark., Shima Sokol (Michael), Edgewater, N.J., Satsuki Sokol (Michael), Washington, D.C., Shawn Sokol, Miami, Fla., Joe Davis (Megan), Fulton, Mo., and Jessie Back(Ryan) Ashland, Mo.; four great-grandsons: Max Olsen, Brett Lace, Gavin Back, and J. Elliot Davis.
Family members wish to express deep thanks for the loving care Kay received by the skilled nursing staff at Presbyterian Manor. She considered so many of the staff to be her good friends. We would also like to thank those at Churchill Manor for their support during her brief stay there.
A Memorial Service will be held at a future date at the Bella Vista Community Church in Bella Vista, Ark.
