The first of at least ten children born to Major Francis & Sarah (Skelton) Hardgrave of Wilkes Co VA, formerly of Augusta Co VA and later of Willamson Co TN, James married Almira Dyer abt 1795 in TN, probably in Williamson Co.

2) Celia Hardgrave (1797-1859), m: Thomas Edmond Gilliam.
3) Johnson Hardgrave (1802-1825), m: Sally Baxter.
4) Susannah Hardgrave, m: Stokely A Davis.
5) Amy Hardgrave (1807-1872), m: Rueben McFadden.
6) John Davis Hardgrave Sr (1809-1875), m: Virginia Armstrong.
7) Nancy M Hardgrave (1813-1882), m: Samuel Harkreader.
8) Robert Francis Hardgrave (1818-1846), m: Nancy Bowen Ward.
