Wreck Kills Winslow Man
Andie R. Watkins, 5O, of Winslow, was killed Tuesday afternoon in a one car crash on Hwy. 71, three miles south of West Fork.
Injured in the accident was Orley M. Hooten, 57, of Winslow. Hooten is reported in "stable and satisfactory" condition in an intensive care unit at the Veteran's Administration Hospital.
State Police Trooper Charles Brooks said the accident occurred when Watkins lost control of the car while rounding a slight curve, and plunged over a 15-foot embankment.
Brooks said the car landed in an upright position, but that both men were pinned in the car for about 20 or 30 minutes because the left door was jammed and the right door was against the embankment. A wrecker was used to get the men out of the car.
Hooten was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center by ambulance, where he was placed in intensive care before being transferred to the VA hospital.
Watkins death brings to 24 the number of fatalities which have occurred in Washington County since Jan. 1, 1973.
Watkins was born Feb. 16, 1923 in Brentwood, the son of Reece and Rilla Vesta Hughes Watkins. He was a retired carpenter and a veteran World War II.
Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Marie Smith Watkins of the home; six sons, Tommy and Curtis of Springdale, Audie R. and Eddie of Rogers, Allen of the U.S. Air Force in Thailand and Timmy of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Audean Cantrell of Naches, Wash.; his mother of Springdale; one brother, Amos of Winslow; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Moore's Chapel.
