James Thomas "J.T." Shairrick, 95, of Urbana, Arkansas died Friday, September 13, 2013, at the Tidewell Hospice House in Sarasota, Fla., following a brief illness.

Born Aug. 11, 1918, in Eagle Mills, he was the son of Ewen and Lottie Ballinger Shairrick.

Mr. Shairrick was a retired Ironworker with Local 710/623 of Baton Rouge, La., and a WWII veteran with the 300th Combat Engineers earning 5 Bronze stars, and a Purple Heart for fierce battles in Europe, including battles in Rhineland, Ardennes, Omaha Beach, Normandy, and Central Europe.

He was a member of Knowles Chapel Baptist Church.

Mr. Shairrick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Shairrick; one brother, Monroe Shairrick; and two sisters, Zera Quarles and Vera Clemons.

Survivors include his daughter, Beth McCurdy and her husband, Dan, of Nokomis, Fla.; one grandson, Grant McCurdy of Nokomis; one granddaughter, Lauren Russ and her husband, David, of Pine Bluff; one great-grandson. Alexander Russ of Pine Bluff; one sister, Zelpha Grasty of Thornton; one brother, Clifton Henry Shairrick, of New Caney, Texas ; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Mr. Shairrick's name or the Komen Foundation in memory of his late wife. Services were by Farley Funeral Homes and Crematory of Venice, Florida.
