GANNAWAY, W.H. - Rev. W.H. Gannaway was born in Morgan Co., Illinois Oct. 21, 1844 and died in St. Joseph, Mo. Sept. 9, 1922, aged 77 years, 10 months and 19 days. He was born of religious stock, of old Methodist parentage, and grew up under the influence of a Godly home. When fifteen years of age he was converted and consecrated his young life to his newly found Lord. He was a product of the farm and while still on the farm the Civil War broke out. He was too young to go but obtained the consent of his father to enlist when he was eighteen. He joined Co. K, 52nd Illinois Inf. and served until March 20, 1866. The last eight months of his army life was spent among the Indians. In obtaining his education he encountered many and heavy odds, but there was no such word as "give-up" in his vocabulary. He became a teacher of school and of music, wherein he spent nearly ten years. Then came his call to the ministry. He was not disobedient. He entered Garret Biblical Institute and pursued the course to graduation. His war experience left him with a serious handicap, a frail body, but nothing daunted, he labored on and was able to give upwards of forty years to the service of his church and his Savior. He was united in marriage to Miss Evaline Veech December 19, 1867, to which happy union three children were born, two of whom passed on before to beckon them forward. For nine years they were happy together and then the wife and mother was called and he was left alone with his little son. In 1878 he was again united in marriage, this time to Miss Jennie M. Lane, who still lives to survive him and mourn his going. To this union, seven children were born, five of them growing to man and womanhood. He took the retired relation in his Conference in 1913 abut continued to preach until his failing health compelled him to cease. Besides his bereaved wife he leaves four children, Paul N. Gannaway of Mount Vernon, Illinois; Mrs. Ossie L. Robinson of Jackson, Miss.; Earl Gannaway of Dupo, Ill. and Mrs. Imogene Pritchett of Harrison, Ark. and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his going. The remains were brought to Rogers, his late home, and laid to rest in the beautiful Rogers Cemetery, by the side of his son, Rollin, who died four years ago. The funeral services were held at the First M.E. church Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Harry R. Osborne.
