Spectacular Springdale Crash Kills Two

SPRINGDALE -- Two men were killed in a spectacular collision between a semi-trailer truck and a car a mile east of here on Hwy. 68 about 10:25 p.m. Thursday.

Dead are Finis R. Oliver, 32, of Dyer, Tenn. driver of the car, and William B. Callis, 40, of Route 1, Hiwasse, driver of the Jones Truck Lines semi-trailer.

The truck ploughed into a roadside tavern alter the collision, destroying the front portion of the frame building and scattering debris over a wide area.

Five occupants of the tavern escaped injury because they were not in the front portion of the building, where pool tables are located. Normally several persons would have been in that area.

Oliver's shattered automobile came to rest upright on a large tree stump with all four wheels off the ground.

State Police said Oliver pulled from the Pleasant Valley road into the westbound truck's path. After the impact, the truck jackknifed and slid sideways into the Grapevine Tavern.

The building was demolished. Spectators on the scene said the building looked like "it had been hit by an explosion."

Callis was thrown from his truck and crushed underneath the tavern's porch roof. Oliver was pronounced dead on arrival at Springdale Memorial Hospital.

Springdale firemen were called to the scene because both diesel fuel from the truck and bottled gas from the tavern's heating system were escaping and fire was feared.

Troopers said the truck traveled 100 feet after jackknifing before striking the tavern.

Deaths of the two men brought Washington County's highway toil for the year to eight, compared with 13 at the same time last year. It was the third time this year that two persons have died in a single accident. Two men died in a Jan. 27 accident and two women were killed near Winslow on March 23.

Funeral arrangements for Callis will be announced by Sisco Funeral Chapel. Oliver's body will be returned to Tennessee for funeral and burial.
