G.W. Benton – News was received here this morning that G.W. Benton dropped dead at the home of his son in Ft. Smith this morning at 11 o’clock. The deceased had been in bad health for the past four months. He was an old ex-Confederate soldier and one of Fayetteville’s most honored citizens. He came to this county 40 years ago and has lived here ever since. He was 70 years of age. Three daughters, Mrs. John Carlisle of the city, Mrs. Lowery of Little Rock, Miss Kate Benton Kanady of Mill City, Oregon and son John of Fort Smith survive him. The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at Rieff’s Chapel.

G.W. Benton filed Veteran Application #13299 for a Confederate pension and it was received August 9, 1908 as being allowed at the State, citing service with Company B, 9thGeorgia from 1861 thru 1865.
