IN MEMORIAM.
Mrs. Rebecca Rountree, formerly a resident of Ozark, died at her home in
Little Rock, at 4 o'clock, a. m. on Sunday, October 14, 1895, in the 64th year of her age. She was was a native of South Carolina, the daughter of Charles and Rebecca Jones, of Jonesville, in that state. Her parents removed to Lauderdale county, Tennessee, while she was quite young, and she spent most of her life in Tennessee. Her husband, W. T. Rountree, died in Memphis in 1883. Three children survive her: Mrs. E. H. Mathes, of Ozark, and Misses Addie and Lura Rountree of Little Rock. They were all with her during her last illness, which covered a period of several months, and gave lavishly of that tender ministry that only loving hearts and willing hands can bestow.
For more than three months she knew she could not survive her ailment, heart disease, and yet she was the most cheerful member of the household, and often testified as to her perfect faith in the Christian religion, and her readiness to answer the summons. Her religious belief was as simple and steadfast as the faith of a child. She and her husband united with the Baptist church in Tennessee many years ago, and all her after life exemplified her faith.
In all the relations of life she was an exemplary character. During an intimate acquaintance, lasting for more than fifteen years, I never knew her to say or do a really unkind or uncharitable thing.
She was a fine type of the old time southern lady, and bore herself with characteristic dignity and fortitude through evil as well as through good fortune.
Many of her newly formed friends and neighbors in the "City of Roses"
assisted in the last funeral rites, and she was laid to rest in a quiet spot, under a majestic oak, in Mt. Holly cemetery. The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers: Col. John G. Fletcher, Mr. A. E. Cook, Gen. W. E. Atkinson, Hon. Marcellus L. Davis, Mr. Lessley, G. Meyers, and Gen. R. W. Green. Appropriate funeral services were conducted by Doctors Miller and Hagan of the Presbyterian church, her own pastor being out of the city.
A noble hearted, pure minded woman, a most loving and gentle mother
and grand mother, her loss will fall with peculiar force upon those of her immediate family, who alone could know her real worth.
