An Outrage in Arkansas

Memphis, Tenn., Jan. 8, - Mrs. Kate Carpenter and her mother, Mrs. Davis, were killed and M. P. Carpenter, a wealthy planter, probably fatally injured by the hand of five or six white men who beat the women to death and left the man for dead at the Carpenter home near Blytheville, Ark., last night according to reports received here today.
The attack upon the Carpenter home came without warning. A knock came at the front door shortly before midnight. The farmer answered it, and as he opened the door was struck on the head with a heavy club carried by the man presumed to have led the band. He dropped to the floor of the hall and over his prostrate, unconscious form the leader sprang, followed by the others. The two women were the next objects of attack and from the position of their bodies as found made desperate resistance before being clubbed to death. Furniture was demolished, window hanging torn into shreds and glass and bric-a-brac smashed as if a terrific hand-to-hand encounter had preceded the deaths of the women.
Neighbors chanced to visit the planter's home today and upon discovering the bodies of the two women and Carpenter in a serious condition, gave the alarm. Physicians were summoned and Carpenter was revived long enough to gasp out the details already related. Later he lapsed into unconsciousness and his death is momentarily expected. A posse of citizens is searching the countryside in the endeavor to capture the alleged assailants, descriptions of whom are said to have been given by Carpenter. Sheriff H. C. Hall of Mississippi county is leading the posse. An inquest is being conducted today.
Rumors at Blytheville have it that the attack against the Carpenters is due to the enmity borne Carpenter by certain small farmers in the neighborhood. It was also reported that the planter gave the names of these to the sheriff and that warrants have been issued for them, but their names were withheld.
