Mrs. Velma Lee (Cansler) Willis, resident of Hickory Ridge, Arkansas, departed this life on Sunday, March 15, 2020, at Woodruff County Health Center in McCrory, at the age of 82. Velma was born in the family home at Gourdneck on Tuesday, October 19, 1937, the daughter of Mr. Henry Theodore Cansler and Mrs. Savanna Lorena (Sprouce) Cansler.

Velma and Mr. Cleo Willis were united in marriage on February 9, 1956, and they cherished 45 years together prior to Mr. Willis’ passing in 2001. Mrs. Willis was a member of Laurel Street Assembly of God in Hickory Ridge where she taught Sunday School. Velma was a devoted student of the Bible, and started a devotional group with other residents at Woodruff County Health Center. Velma liked to stay busy; she volunteered with the Ladies’ Home Extension for 15 years, and greatly enjoyed helping others. Mrs. Willis enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crafts of all kinds. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, visiting with her friends, and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Willis was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Willis; her parents, Henry and Lorena Cansler; and a brother, William Charles “Bill” Cansler.

She is survived by a daughter, Suzi Dale and husband, Jonathan, of Fisher; a brother, Jimmy Oneal Cansler of McCrory; a sister, Anna Louise “Peanut” Cansler-Skinner of Velvet Ridge; a stepdaughter, Loyce Bauman of Detroit, Michigan; two grandchildren, Steven Dale McFadden and wife, Karen, and Michael Jeffrey McFadden; two bonus grandchildren, Jed Dale and wife, Katie, and Brooke Dale; three great-grandchildren, Jessie, Dax, and Dawson Dale; many nephews and nieces; a special friend, Junior Fields; her partners in crime, Bonnie Rudick and Patricia Richey; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Woodruff County Health Center and Legacy Hospice for loving Mrs. Velma like family.

Due to current health concerns, private committal services will be conducted in Calvary Cemetery at Gourdneck.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Michael McFadden, Jonathan Dale, Dale Gaskins, Mike King, Rick Adams, James Henry Cansler, and Lane Allen Cansler. Honorary pallbearers are Steven McFadden, Michael Zeyloth, Tim Brown, Jordan Fortune, Llogan Jones, and Sam Miller.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Willis’ memory to Calvary Baptist Cemetery Fund c/o Judy Williamson 12222 Hwy 37 S McCrory, Arkansas 72101.
