Mr. Joe Coe of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the age of 93. He was born April 22, 1925 in Swifton, Arkansas, the son of Boyce and Catherine (Smith) Coe. On May 4, 1945, Mr. Joe Coe married Miss Angela McCartney, and together they spent over 73 years.
Mr. Coe was a proud United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II upon the USS Nassau Aircraft Carrier in the South Pacific. The carrier was awarded 5 Battle Stars. Mr. Coe himself earned the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and a World War II Victory Medal. He attended college on the GI Bill, and was a charter member of the Newport, Arkansas V.F.W., and American Legion.
Mr. Coe retired from McDonald Equipment, and was a former Jackson County Judge.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport.
Mr. Coe was preceded in death by two sons, Joey Coe and Charles “Scooter” Coe; one grandson, Leslie Joseph Steen; and a great-granddaughter, Catherine Grace Long.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Angela (McCartney) Coe of the home; one daughter, Janie Steen and husband, Wally, of Newport; one sister, Mary Sanders of Little Rock; three grandchildren, Joey Steen, Catherine Dunn, and Stacy Coe Martin; and four great-grandchildren, Charlie Bell, Caden Dunn, Lauren Moushegian, and Emily Cambias.
Friends may visit at the funeral home, Saturday, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Remmel-McCall Cemetery.
