Angela McCartney
Dec 25, 1927-Feb 07, 2020

On February 7, 2020, our foundation, our rock and the inspiration of our lives, Angela McCartney Coe, lifelong resident of Remmel Community, went to be with the Lord and her dear loved ones already in Heaven. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend to all who knew her. Her endless acts of love, kindness, and generosity, will be missed by all.
Born on Christmas Day, 1927, she was the most loving, caring, and compassionate warrior we have ever known. She spent many hours taking care of others and always encouraged all of us in so many ways.
Angela was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and, in her younger years, loved working with and teaching children. Her children and grandchildren were the loves of her life.
She loved sports and was a twirler in band, and played basketball while in high school. She was a Newport Greyhound at heart!
Following high school, on May 4th, 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, Joe Coe, and they spent 73 happy years together, raising three children and enjoying each other through many good times. For several years, they raised chickens on “Coe’s Egg Farm”, and supplied many delicious eggs to homes and businesses in Jackson County. Angela was an entrepreneur, owner of Angela’s Fashions for many years. She dressed many women in the finest of clothing, and is remembered until this day for her business knowledge and exquisite taste.
She was a successful land owner and owned and operated Charles McCartney Farms, Inc., which is still presently in operation at Remmel.
Angela and Joe loved spending time at Greer’s Ferry Lake, where she loved to fish. Many fun hours were spent at their cabin there, where all her family loved to go.
Angela enjoyed and spent endless hours planning and preparing huge family holiday celebrations. She made sure every family member was invited, and anyone who needed somewhere to celebrate the holidays was welcome.
Angela also enjoyed growing applies in the orchard, grapes in her vineyard, and spent much of her winter picking out pecans from the pecan trees in her yard. She loved to travel, and took various family members on vacations, and she and Joe went on several cruises and never missed a naval ship reunion held in honor of the Navy men who served on the USS Nassau.
Angela generously donated financially to many political and nonpolitical causes, which is something few people knew about her.
No matter what name you called her….Angela, Mema, Angie, Mrs. Angela, she will be greatly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Coe on March 21, 2019; two sons, Joey Coe and Charles “Scooter” Coe; a grandson, Leslie Joseph Steen; a great granddaughter, Catherine Grace Long; one sister, Ava Lee Birdsong; and her parents, Charles and Hazel (Heffington) McCartney.
Angela is survived by one daughter, Janie Steen and husband, Wally, of Newport; a daughter-in-law, Jan P. Coe of Newport; her grandchildren, Joey Steen and wife, Robin, of Batesville, Catherine Steen Dunn of Newport, Stacy Martin of Newport, Bubba Sink and wife, Alison, of Newport, and Christi Sink of Newport; her great-grandchildren, Charley Bell and wife, Ragen, Lauren Moushegian, Emily Cambias, Wesley Sink, and Taryn Sink; her great-great grandson, Tripp Bell; a special caregiver, Linda McKinney; and a lifetime of friends.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday beginning at 12:30 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with the Honorable Judge Harold Erwin officiating.
Those honored to serve as honorary pallbearers are Johnny Porter, Phil Madison, and Herbert Heffington.
The family wishes to offer many thanks to the staff, nurses, and CNA’s at ST. Michael’s Place, and many other caretakers too numerous to name, who so lovingly cared for her. Our thanks to her special caregiver, Linda McKinney for her many hours of love and care.
Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, 1 Children’s Way, Little Rock, AR 72202, or the First United Methodist Church, 217 Laurel Street, Newport, AR 72112.
