When James Clarence Story was born on April 27, 1844, in Howell, Missouri, his father, William, was 25 and his mother, Mary, was 22. He married California A Gardenhire and they had five children together. He then married Nellie (Myers) Neese on November 20, 1884. He died on December 19, 1919, in Story, Arkansas, having lived a long life of 75 years, and was buried there.
