Mr. Homer James Bigham, Sr., resident of Bentonville, Arkansas, departed this life on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at The Meadows Independent and Assisted Living Community in Bentonville at the age of 86. Homer was born in Mulberry, Arkansas on October 5, 1934, the son of Charles Woodrow Bigham and Viola (Abney) Bigham.

Homer was raised on the family farm in rural Jackson County where the Bighams raised rice and cotton, and Homer worked alongside his parents and his six siblings. His favorite memory of childhood was visiting the county fair. He was an active child, and loved to ride horses and play baseball. He attended Beedeville Schools.

Mr. Bigham proudly dedicated nearly 21 years of service to the United States Navy. While in the Navy he was allowed the opportunity to travel around the world for 287 days in 1970 aboard the U.S.S. Shangri-La CVS-38 aircraft carrier where he worked in the engine room. He was able to travel to many countries and even visited the 1970 World’s Fair in Japan.

On March 2, 1974, Homer married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean (Yager) Bigham in Tennessee. Homer was employed in the control rooms of two hospitals prior to his retirement at the age of 58. He continued his love of adventure by owning a motorcycle with a side car and traveling as much as possible. Homer and Dorothy purchased an RV and traveled most of the United States. The couple cherished 38 years together before Dorothy’s death in 2012.

Mr. Bigham lived by the motto to treat everyone the way you want to be treated. His favorite book was the Bible, and in recent years at The Meadows he could be found most days walking the halls and stopping to visit with as many people as possible. He loved to talk about his travels and current events. He enjoyed playing Bean Bag Baseball and earned the title of “Home Run Homer.” He was a member of the Bentonville Church of Christ.

Homer was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Bigham; his parents, Charles and Viola Bigham; a son, Howard Lyndon Bigham; a brother, Turner O’Neal Bigham; and two sisters, June Danice Beasley and Della Brenda Bigham.
