Barbara
Oct 25, 1940-June 02, 2015

Mrs. Barbara S. Bowman of the Remmel Community, Newport departed this life on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the age of 74. She was born October 25, 1940, at Newport, the daughter of George Thomas Roberts and Christine McIntosh Roberts.

Barbara was a member of the Newport High School Class of 1958. During high school she was voted Thanksgiving Queen, Homecoming Royalty, and was a cheerleader for the Newport Greyhounds. As a teenager, she worked in the soda fountain at Shannon-Ritter Drug Store. Barbara fondly remembered her days as a “soda jerk.”

Miss Barbara Roberts married Mr. David Bowman on December 30, 1959. Over these fifty-five years, they have centered their life together around their common faith in Jesus Christ, and made their close-knit family, many friends, and church family their priority. Together, Barbara and David raised two daughters, enjoyed five granddaughters, two great grandchildren, and were excitedly awaiting the arrival of their third great-grandchild.

During the 1970’s, Barbara owned and operated the Village Youngland, a children’s clothing shop. She enjoyed a wide circle of friends and activities. Barbara loved to travel, enjoy beautiful things and places, read, play Bridge, and see Broadway Plays. She also hosted several exchange students in her home.

Knowing Barbara Bowman was a privilege. She made everyone she met immediately at ease with her beautiful warm smile and genuine personality. Barbara was a loved and devoted member of The Remmel Church. Over the years, her devotion to the Lord was evidenced by her service to both His church and to the un-churched. Barbara’s generous and gentle spirit has guided many people through some of their most difficult times and encouraged others through some of their happiest times. She has written an untold number of encouragement cards to the men of John 3:16 and the women of John 3:17. Barbara believed in the power of prayer and spent many hours praying for others. Faithfully serving as a church member and Elder’s wife, she hosted showers, provided food to many families, and hosted a Bible study group weekly in her home for over ten years.

Barbara’s greatest passion for ministry became her love of the John 3:17 program. She mothered many women by simply sharing her kind and gentle ways with them. Barbara shared her spirit of love and contentment in Christ with these women leading many to salvation.

Barbara leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and generosity. She will be missed by many, but, none more than her loving family.

Her parents and one sister, Mary Anna Grady, preceded her in death.

Barbara is survived by her husband, David N. Bowman of the home; two daughters, Suzanne Bowman Rudd and husband, Roger, of Newport and Dr. Karen D. Jones and husband, Arvil, of the Remmel Community; five grandchildren, Sadie Jones, Maggie Bontrager and husband, Daniel, Tabitha Davidson and husband, Pete, Molly Goyne, and Abbey Grace Jones; and two great grandchildren, Junie Violet Bullard and Caleb Bontrager. Also surviving is one sister, Bette Latus of Hartford, Michigan and her father and mother-in-law, Morris and Violet Bowman of the Remmel Community.

Friends may visit at the funeral home, Friday, June 5, 2015, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at The Remmel Church. Interment will follow at McCall-Remmel Cemetery.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are David N. Bowman, Arvil Jones, Roger Rudd, Joey Don Huey, Robert Foster, and Sonny Buford. Honorary pallbearers will be the past and present members of the John 3:17 Ministry.

Arrangements by Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.
