Mrs. Maxine (Grady) Shepherd of Searcy, Arkansas, departed this life on Monday, July 27, 2020, at the age of 92. She was born August 23, 1927 in Beedeville, the daughter of John Calvin and Frances (Beede) Grady.

Mrs. Shepherd was a 1943 graduate of Beedeville High School. Following high school, she attended Harding University, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in 1949. Mrs. Shepherd taught school while earning her degree, and was Harding’s First female P.E. Teacher and basketball coach. She taught in many places in Arkansas, including Paris, Newport, McCrory, Beedeville, and Fort Smith.

She was a member of West Side Church of Christ in Searcy. Mrs. Shepherd enjoyed reading, gardening, swimming, and especially coaching women’s basketball. She was a wonderful Christian woman, wife, and mother.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John Grady; one sister, Mary Etta Grady Madden; and her parents. Mrs. Shepherd is survived by her husband of 63 years, Doug Shepherd of the home; one son, Michael Grady Shepherd and wife, Rose, of Beedeville; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and more friends than anyone could count.

Friends may visit at the funeral home, Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with interment following in Eightmile Cemetery.
