Friends in this city and community will regret to learn of the death in Blytheville last Sunday of Mrs. Katie (Garge) Mertins, widow of the late Frank Mertens, who formerly lived on the Pierce farm a few miles west of the city. Her death was due to internal cancer and occurred about 3:30 Sunday afternoon, the family having removed one day last week from their farm home a few miles north of Blytheville, into that city.
Death came at the end of a long period of illness, Mrs. Mertens having been confined to her bed for the past eight months and the end was more or less expected, of course. Funeral services were set for 9 o'clock this morning, at the Catholic church in Blytheville, with interment in Elm cemetery near that city.
Mrs. Mertens was born 46 years ago at Morrison, Mo., and came to this section several years since with her husband and family. She is survived by her parents and one sister, Mary, who is single, and by two sons and two daughters of her own immediate family. These are John and Alva, Miss Hilda and Mrs. Harold Hamby, all of whom live in Blytheville.
It will be recalled that Mr. Mertens died last August after a long illness of dropsy, and one of their sons, Ferdinand, passed away during the preceding month, of a kidney affection.
