WHAYNE, Malinda Jane HOARD - Mrs. M.J. Whayne, widow of the late I.W. Whayne, died at the family residence in Bentonville at 6:50 o'clock Friday morning, May 1, 1925, aged 75 years, 7 months and 13 days. Death occurred only a few hours after an attack of heart trouble with which Mrs. Whayne had suffered for many years. Malinda Jane Hoard was born at Maysville, Mason county, Kentucky Sept. 18, 1849, the daughter of a pioneer Kentucky family. It was in the closing days of the War Between the States when this young couple, like many thousands of others through the South, started to build a home amidst the devastation of the war-torn Southland, and through their lives sturdily maintained faith in themselves, their people and their land. The Whayne home has always been typified by its unequaled hospitality and a veritable host of people, living and dead, could testify to unforgettable kindnesses and courtesies shown them by members of the Whayne family in health and happiness, in sickness, trouble and death. No more staunch Southerner ever breathed than "Uncle Buck" Whayne, and his bride of the sixties was just as firm in her love of and faith in the South. Mr. Whayne died Dec. 29, 1902. In early childhood Mrs. Whayne became a member of the Primitive Baptist church and remained true to this church until her death, often going many miles to attend its services. Her life was an exemplification of faith, hope, charity and hospitality, mother's love and a friendliness for all with whom she came in contact. The Whaynes moved to Bentonville in 1882. All the children have been reared here, the lives of all the family becoming a part of the life and progress of the community. Mrs. Whayne is survived by two sons, R.C. Whayne, Bentonville and Will Whayne of Independence, Kan.; three daughters, Mrs. R.G. Macon, near Ketchum, Okla.; Miss Lydia Whayne and Mrs. Bert Riddle, both of Bentonville. A son, Mark Whayne, died a few years ago. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services, attended by a great number of friends, were held at the Whayne home on East Eleventh street Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Oliver Koons, pastor of the Primitive Baptist church at Little Flock. In respect for Mrs. Whayne, a member of the city council, the city officials attended the funeral in a body. Interment was made in the family lot at the Bentonville cemetery by the side of her husband and other members of the family.
