Fire Near Mountain Home Kills Woman

BY JULIE STEWART
SPECIAL TO THE DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

MOUNTAIN HOME--A woman died in a house fire south of Mountain Home early Friday, authorities said.

Walcie M. Merrill, 64, became trapped in her burning house when she stopped to get her purse, her husband, Richard Merrill, told investigators. Richard Merrill, 67, escaped by jumping out of a bathroom window, Baxter County Deputy Michael Holland said.

The fire started near a wood stove in the one-story house in the Arkana community southeast of Mountain Home.

Her death was ruled an accident, Holland said.

Walcie Merrill called 911 to report the fire about 2:30 a.m. Friday. Deputies and members of the Tracy Volunteer Fire Department arrived a few minutes later.

Richard Merrill said he and his wife tried to get out of the front of the house but were driven back by smoke and flames.

They became separated in the smoke-filled house when she went back to get her purse.

Her husband felt his way through the smoke to the bathroom, where he punched out a window and jumped outside, Holland said.

He suffered a broken heel in the fall.

When Holland arrived, the front of house was engulfed in flames, and smoke was pouring through every window. He found Richard Merrill, who said he didn't think his wife had gotten out. The husband said she might be in a back bedroom, Holland said.

Holland and another deputy, Sgt. Phillip Melton, broke out the bedroom window but couldn't get inside because of the fire and smoke.

Walcie Merrill's body was found in the kitchen, about five feet from a window, Holland said.
