SPRINGDALE — Carl Edward "Ed" Abbott Jr., 63, of Springdale died Monday, Jan. 27, 2013. He was born June 20, 1950, in Parkview, Kan., to Carl Edward and Helen Jewel Frederick Abbott Sr.
Ed was a devoted band teacher throughout his life. He graduated from Arkansas Tech then received his master's in music education from the University of Arkansas. His teaching career began in Mena, then Rogers and retired after 27 years from Central Junior High School in Springdale.
He was named Arkansas Band Director of the Year in 2002, and served as president of the Arkansas Band Masters Association. He was awarded the prestigious ASBDA Stanbury award at both the State and Southwest Regional levels. For 15 years he chaperoned the Razorback band. He also taught private lessons and was highly sought after throughout the region. Ed was a member of Cross Church.
He is survived by his wife, Linda (Sharp) Abbott of the home, whom he married Dec. 19, 1981, in Springdale; a daughter, Ashleigh Michalik and husband, Zack, and their children, Clairissa and Hannah, all of Springdale; a brother, Gary Abbott of Stanley, Kan.; and four sisters, Linda Marenic of Canastota, N.Y., Debbie Daily of Fort Smith, Karen Beeks of Farmington and Amy Smith of Fayetteville.
A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Cross Church in Springdale. Interment will be at Bluff Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home; online guest book at www.heritageofnwa.com.
