Thelma Bates Cabaniss, 93, a resident of Russellville, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.

She was born July 26, 1922, in Waters, Ark., to Marion and Missouri Jane Smith Bates. She was a graduate of Florida State University and was a teacher with the Russellville Public Schools for many years, where she was able to touch the lives of many children. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Arkansas Education Association and a lifetime member of the Arkansas River Valley Gun Club. She loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was also a devoted Christian and a member of First Baptist Church of Russellville since 1959, where she attended the Golden Voyagers Bible Class. She loved playing bridge, was a wonderful cook, making wonderful fried chicken and was an avid Razorback fan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George W. L. Cabaniss; and eight brothers and sisters, Lemuel Bates, Myrtle Fountain, Ethel Lyles, Molly Howard, Esther Putman, Clyde Bates, Gladys Hoover and Elvis Bates.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, George M. and Barbara Cabaniss of Van Buren; a granddaughter and her husband, Candice A. and Aaron Beshears of Van Buren; a great-grandson, Taryn Lane Settle of Van Buren; two step-granddaughters and their husbands, Corri and Hung Tran of Fort Smith and Hannah and Ben Womack of Van Buren; two step-great-grandchildren, Morghan Beshears and Seifer Tran, both of Fort Smith; a brother-in-law, Winford Hoover of Russellville; special friends, Melinda Harris of Atkins, Mary Cabaniss of North Little Rock and Betty Fuller and family; numerous loving nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. on Thursday at Humphrey Chapel with the Rev. Stephen P. Davis and the Rev. John Lonon officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville by Humphrey Funeral Service.

Active pallbearers will be Elwin Hoover, Don Keaster, Chad Keaster, Jeremy Keaster, Doug Doughty and Bobby Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Doughty, Gary Willoughby, Winford Hoover, Dalton Doughty, David Doughty, Lee Howard, Gerald Lyles, Mike Hoke and the members of the Golden Voyagers Bible Class at First Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
