Gary Samuel Steelman, Sr. 70, died Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Pine Hills Nursing Home in Camden following complication from Alzheimer’s.

Sam is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jill Flynt Steelman; his three sons, Kristopher Noel Steelman and his wife Katherine Steelman, his two kids Kristopher Daulton and Kristen Noelle Steelman; Gary Samuel Steelman II and his wife Alicia Steelman, their son Baylor Karston Steelman; Clayton Flynt Steelman and his wife Dr. Lydia Steelman, their two kids Kylie Hope and Naomi Grace Steelman. Sam also leaves behind his older brother Richard Dean Steelman and his three sisters Judy Ann Martin and her husband Charlie, Dixie Lee Pennington and her husband Wayne, and Elsie Mae Steelman, and sister in law Dot Steelman, surviving wife of Eugene Steelman, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Hollie Mae Steelman; his father, Leamon Dean Steelman; his oldest brother Franklin Eugene Steelman; his sister Ruby Lee Steelman; and his two grandsons, Karston Flynt Steelman, son of Clay and Lydia Steelman, and Taylor Steelman, son of Gary and Alicia Steelman.

Mr. Steelman was born on December 26th 1949 in Camden, AR to Dean and Hollie Steelman. Sam was the second to youngest of 7 siblings. In the winter of 1972 Sam was setup on a blind date with Jill Flynt. They would go on to get married in the Fall of 1973. Sam began his career as a surveyor for the Arkansas State Highway Department. On January 1st, 1973 Sam went to work for the City of Camden where he would spend the next 45 years.

Sam was an active member of FBC Camden. He loved playing softball with his buddies for many years throughout South Arkansas. Sam was on the City Bowling League as well. His interest included hunting and fishing, working in the yard and napping in his recliner. He really loved his sports. Some of his favorite past times were coaching and watching his three sons from t-ball all the way to college sports. Sam also served as a volunteer fireman for the Camden Fire Department (22 years). He was a devoted spouse, dad, grandad, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday January 28th at Proctor Funeral Home from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 29th at FBC Camden. The service will start at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers the family would like for memorial gifts to be donated to OCMC Hospice or First Baptist Church Camden building fund. The Steelman family wants to extend a heartfelt appreciation to OCMC Hospice.
