When Lillian Etta Scruggs was born on February 14, 1874, in White, Arkansas, her father, Robert, was 27, and her mother, Sarah, was 28. She married William Mathis "Yank" Benton on December 23, 1888, in her hometown. They had six children in 12 years. She died as a young mother in 1906 in White, Arkansas, at the age of 32, and was buried there.

He married Lillian Etta Scruggs on December 23, 1888, in his hometown. They had six children in 12 years. He died on April 24, 1929, in Pleasant Grove, Arkansas, at the age of 61, and was buried in White, Arkansas.
