When James Thomas Freeman was born in September 1842 in Buncombe, North Carolina, his father, Joshua, was 20 and his mother, Spicy, was 23. He had seven brothers and eight sisters. He died on July 19, 1905, in Lamar, Oklahoma, at the age of 62.
