Trueman Million Martin, 75, former president of Lion Oil Co. and retired vice president and director of Monsanto Co., died at a local hospital Sunday afternoon after a brief illness. Born in the farming community of Roodhouse, Ill., Mr. Martin was the son of George W. and Tempie Million Martin. He started his business career as a stenographer with Crane Co. in Chicago, following graduation from Brown's College. After serving in the United States Army during World War I, he entered the oil business by selling oil and gas leases. He came to El Dorado fro9m St. Louis, Mo., where he had served as general manager of Mid-Continent Petroleum Corp. of Kentucky. Mr. Martin joined Lion Oil in 1929 as vice president and director, became executive vice president in 1939, and president in 1947, serving under the late Col. T. H. Barton, chairman of the board. When Lion merged into Monsanto Chemical Co. in 1955, he assumed his vice presidency and directorship of Monsanto. He served on the company's executive committee from 1958 until his retirement in September of 1960. For many years, Mr. Martin was an active member in a number of national oil and industrial organizations including the American Petroleum Institute, Independent Petroleum Association of America, and National Association of Manufacturers. He also served on the national boards of the Boy Scouts of America, the American Red Cross, the U. S. Chamber of Commerce; and also as the chairman of National Sunday School Week of the Laymon's Council. He served as vice president and director of the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, first chairman of the Greater El Dorado Committee, national councillor and board member of the Greater El Dorado Chamber of Commerce, the first chairman of the El Dorado Planning Commission. He was a member of the board of directors of the Exchange Bank and Trust Co., a life member of the Kiwanis Club of El Dorado, and a board member of the Ouachita River Valley Association. He was a member and former elder of the First United Methodist Church of El Dorado. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Helen Thisted Martin; one son, T. M. Martin, Jr., of San Bernadino, Claif.; three daughters, Mrs. James W. Garison of El Dorado; Mrs. William F. Stutts of Dallas, Tex.; and Mrs. Calvin J. Dillaha of Little Rock; and 18 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Alvin Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington Cemetery under the direction of Rumph Mortuary.
