A Funeral Service for Joan Haley Carder will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. in the Roller Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Max Pyron officiating. Visitation will be at 10:00 A.M. prior to the service.
Joan passed away Monday morning, February 13, 2012, at Good Samaritan Village in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 81. She was born July 22, 1930, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, the daughter of Bryan and Ruby Haley. She married Jim Carder in Little Rock and moved to Mountain Home after they both retired. Jim and Joan were married 47 years before he passed away in 2003.
Joan was a 1948 graduate of Mountain Home High School. She then furthered her education with a bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas and a master's degree from the University of Chicago. Joan had a love of people, and this was evident from her career in social work. Joan became a published author both nationally and internationally. She was also twice named Arkansas Social Worker of the Year. Her love of teaching led her to be a professor at the UALR Graduate School of Social Work. Joan was Director of Family Life Education at the Family Service Agency of Pulaski County in North Little Rock before her retirement in 1992.
Joan was a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the American Group Psychotherapy Association and the Southwestern Group Psychotherapy Association. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Mountain Home, Arkansas.
Joan is survived by her beloved brother Warren J. Haley of Mountain Home and by two stepsons, Robbie and Steve Carder. She is also survived by several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Burial will be in Mountain Home Cemetery with Frank Huckaba, Mike Risk, Danny Ponder, Tommy Roane, Lane Strother and Mike Williams as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity of choice. Arrangements are by Roller Funeral Home.
