Mrs. Voree Evans Killough of Searcy passed away on the morning of July 14, 2005 at her home on Meadow Lane. Her son, Dr. Larry R. Killough, was at her side. She would have been 95 years old in December. She was born in Atkins, Arkansas on December 28, 1910 to Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Evans. After attending business school in Texas, she moved to Searcy, where the only person she knew was Ms. Alta Watkins; a former neighbor in Atkins. She managed the Western Union Office into which Tommy Killough walked one day. She married him in 1931. She always loved doing things for others. That love was sometimes put into a pie for a friend or a blanket with a crocheted edge for a baby. Early on she started the hot lunch program for the school in Bald Knob. This meant getting other mothers to help her in planting, canning and cooking for the children. For some of them, it was the only hot meal of the day. She taught Sunday school for 70 years. She began teaching in Bald Knob when she was 20 and retired from teaching the Sherman and Hallie Yarnell Classes when she was 90. With her sense of humor and optimistic outlook, she always taught that God was a power of compassion and love. She saw the good in everyone. She used to laugh that when her children were in school, they volunteered her for everything. She served as President of the PTA and organized various fund raising activities for good causes. Many will remember her from the Ideal Shop, where she used her sense of style for over thirty years. She always liked looking good. In recent years, she enjoyed baking things to take to church meetings. She was always glad to give away a recipe and she told everyone that the secret of an egg custard was to take it out of the oven while it still jiggled. So it is fitting that her notebook of material for teaching Sunday school fell open all by itself to a page with a recipe. (Recipe for Happiness: Take two cups of Patience, 1 Heartful of Love, 2 Handsful of Generosity, Dash of Laughter, 1 Headful of Understanding, Sprinkle generously with Kindness, Add plenty of Faith and mix well. Spread over a period of a lifetime and serve everybody you meet.) She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by not only her parents and husband, but also by her two brothers, four sisters, and son-in-law Jim Burkett. She was the last. She is survived by her children Thomas Wells Killough, Jr., Dr. Larry R. Killough and wife Julie, and Peggy Killough Burkett; grandchildren Larry R. Killough, Jr., Dr. Timothy M. Killough and wife Brenda, Dr. Lynley Killough McAnalley and husband Dr. Ed McAnalley, John Wells Killough and wife Diane, Robin Taylor Brown, and Pam Cowart and husband Dr. Keith Cowart; great-grandchildren Katie Wells Killough, Webb Killough, Grace Killough, McNiel Killough, Tori Opalecky, Mary Julia Killough, Tucker Brown, McKinley Brown, Andrew Cowart and Aaron Cowart. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Instead of flowers, memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church at 304 North Main Street in Searcy. Services will be held there on Saturday, July 16, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. with interment immediately following at White County Memorial Gardens.
