Native Arkansan, Larry R. Killough, Jr., prominent Searcy attorney and outstanding amateur golfer, died Thursday, August 7, in Searcy.
Born to Julie and Dr. Larry Killough, Sr., in Little Rock in 1959, Larry was big brother to Tim, Lynley, and John. The Killough family settled in Searcy when he was a junior in high school, and Larry led the SHS Lion Golf Team to Arkansas State Championships.
A graduate of Hendrix College in Conway, Killough received his Juris Doctorate in law from the University of Arkansas Law School in Fayetteville. He was awarded a master's degree in tax law from SMU in Dallas, Texas. He returned to Searcy with his family in 1985 and practiced for several years with the Boyett, Morgan, Millar and Killough Law Firm. In1996, he opened his firm, Killough Law Firm.
His accomplishments as a golfer are numerous, and he enjoyed the game with his brothers Tim and John as they practically grew up on the courses in Camden and Searcy. He played in tournaments throughout the state, but he also enjoyed the camaraderie of the late afternoon round with friends or family. He was a familiar sight on the golf course with his son, Webb, a promising young golfer who died in 2006. Recently, his main golf companion was his son, McNiel, a sixth grader at Searcy Middle School, who shows the same grit and talent for the game as his dad.
After Webb's death from an accidental drug overdose, Killough became a champion for drug education for youth. He spoke at schools and events and appeared on several state-wide television programs advocating parental involvement and awareness.
To his daughters, Katie and Grace, he was support group and cheerleader, and he was involved daily with their plans and dreams. He seldom missed an event where any of his children played, performed, or cheered. Larry attended Fellowship Bible Church with them and was involved in the ministries of the church.
His dry wit, keen intellect, and engaging manner made him a natural in courtrooms around the state. His fellow attorneys, judges, clients, staff, and friends share many interesting and colorful stories spawned during his career.
Recently, he had hosted a local radio talk show entitled "Legally Speaking" and enjoyed responding to questions from listeners. He displayed a rare ability to be helpful and entertaining at once.
Killough belonged to many professional organizations and was serving as president of the Searcy Country Club.
He is preceded in death by his son, Webb; grandparents Voree and Tom Killough and Lorene and George McNiel. Larry is survived by his parents, Julie and Dr. Larry Killough, Sr., of Searcy; his brother, Dr. Tim Killough and his wife Brenda, and their children Tori, Mary Julia and Luke, and his brother John Killough and his wife Diane, and their children William and Emma, all of Searcy; and his sister, Dr. Lynley McAnalley, her husband Dr. Ed McAnalley, and their children, Rebekah, John, Christian, and James of Dallas, Texas.
He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss his loving and generous spirit.
After the Christian Celebration of Life, friends are invited to stay for a reception with Larry's family in the reception area of the funeral home.
A private burial will be held later. Memorials may be made to Webb's and Larry's favorite charity, The Sunshine School, 304 South Sowell Street, Searcy, Arkansas 72143.
