Johnny Reid HORN

White County Memorial Gardens Cemetery
White County,
Arkansas

November 3, 1944 - December 12, 2008

Johnny Reid Horn lost his brave fight with lymphoma and heart failure Friday evening, December 12, 2008. He struggled hard to live but the odds were against him. Having suffered a stroke in 1993, he had spent the last 15 years as a hemiplegic, a struggle in itself. His passing was pain free, surrounded by family and friends.

The son of the late Louie and Bernice Horn, Johnny was born in Searcy on November 3, 1944. He graduated from Searcy High School before attending college at UCA. He joined the Army National Guard where he completed training as an Army Ranger. He also served on the Army boxing team in Aberdeen, Maryland. Upon his return, John entered Arkansas State College in Jonesboro. There he joined the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In order to obtain his BS in Psychology/Social Studies, he completed his undergraduate work at Ouachita University in Arkadelphia. Upon completion of his degree, he moved to Little Rock, where he embarked upon a career in social services. He served with the Arkansas Department of Health, Division of Child and Adolescent Services; counselor for troubled youth at Wrightsville Boys Training School; Probation Officer for Little Rock Municipal Court; and Special Investigator with the Pulaski County Prosecutor’s Office. His career ended with his stroke, while serving as a Child Abuse Investigator with the Department of Human Services.

John completed the Arkansas Law Enforcement Academy in Camden, finishing first in his class and achieving the rank of Sharpshooter.

John was known for his keen sense of humor. He enjoyed helping others, especially children and the elderly. He was a champion of animal safety, especially dogs. At one time, he raised Norwegian Elkhounds. He enjoyed traveling, visiting much of Europe, the Caribbean and his favorite, Hawaii. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, Arizona Memorial Museum Association, Arkansas State University Alumni Association, Kappa Alpha Alumni Association, and a supporter of PBS.

Besides his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his grandparents, M.G. and Maude Horn of Letona and Etta and A. C. Webb of White County; one brother, Donald Webb Horn; one niece, Draxie Linn Rogers and one nephew, Brent Reid Rogers; one cousin, Jimmy Dale Burkett; and beloved aunts and uncles. He is survived by his sister, Draxie Rogers (Robert), of Little Rock and Eureka Springs; one nephew, Kyle Rogers (Robin) of Maumelle; one niece, Kalen Rogers Naylor (A.B.) of Little Rock; one great-nephew, Logan Rogers and one great-niece, Regan Rogers of Maumelle; uncle and aunt, Palmer and Joline Webb, aunt and uncle, Hallie and B.R. Sanford, all of Searcy; and six cousins.

He spent the past few years in Eureka Springs, living with his mother, who passed away in February, 2008, and across the street from his sister, Draxie. He had been in Little Rock since September, attempting to improve his health.

Funeral arrangements are by Roller-Daniel Funeral Home of Searcy where family visitation will be Wednesday, December 17, from 5-8 p.m., and funeral services Thursday, December 18, at 2 p.m. Pallbearers are Kyle Rogers, A.B. Naylor, Keith Webb, Duke Webb, Andy Lawrence, Mike Lawrence, Bill Benz and Bill Young. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Glisson of Searcy, Everett Fountain of Eureka Springs, Robert Spraggins, Don Burkett, Brad Burkett, Judge Chris Piazza, and Bud Whetstone, all of Little Rock.

The family would like to acknowledge St. Vincent’s ER, 6th floor nursing staff and social worker for the care they gave John during his illness. The compassion and caring provided by Pleasant Valley Living Center to both John and the family was immeasurable and will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in John’s memory be made to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Searcy, Good Shepherd Animal Shelter of Eureka Springs, Pulaski County Humane Shelter, the Humane Society of Searcy or the ASPCA.
