This old cemetery is located five miles south of Higginson on the west side of Highway 11, just beyond the Ellis Chapel Methodist
Church, which located here in 1914. It originally was named Glade Creek Cemetery, and has also been known as Goodwin
Cemetery because it was established on land donated by the Goodwin family. A former resident of this area told the White County
Historical Society in 2007 that the first burial here was “a little Ellis girl” in an unmarked grave on the side of the creek opposite
from the cemetery. The cemetery’s earliest tombstone, dated 1876, marks the grave of Keren Owen, who was related to the
Goodwins. Three rocks beneath the large tree in the cemetery bear the initials of Goodwins.
In July 1968, the White County Historical Society’s first listing of burials was prepared by Bill Leach, who would later serve as
president and preservation chair. Thirty-two years later the list was updated by Pearl Elliott, who grew up “close enough to the
church to hear the bell ring on Sunday mornings.”
Subsequent updates were prepared by Lee Blair, Historical Society board member, who at year-end 2006 added row numbers to
make it easier to locate graves. However, he noted that some of the rows do not run straight or go all the way through the
cemetery, and some stones are so worn they are no longer readable. He also added a list of people he thinks might be buried here
in unmarked graves. He pointed out that any U.S. veteran buried here in an unmarked grave is probably eligible for a free military
headstone from the federal government. A list of known veterans here has been added.
