A young family of three was wiped out Saturday morning in a fast-speading fire that destroyed a frame home on State Highway 5 about five miles east of Norfork. Dead are Lee Walker Clark, 22, his wife, Melba Carolyn, 21, and their six-months-old daughter, Rhonda Renell.
Sheriff Emmett Edmonds said officers did not know what caused the fire.
He reported that the blaze apparently started about 7:30 to 8AM and that the house was quickly consumed. Clark, badly burned, made his way out of the house and was found at the edge of the highway, the sheriff stated. The bodies of Clark's wife and child, still on the bed, were removed about 9AM, Edmonds said.
Clark was taken to a Calico Rock hospital and later to the University Medical Center at Little Rock, where he died early Sunday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Clark were both employees of Baxter Laboratories, Inc., and had worked at the Mt. Home plant until 12:30AM Satruday, Edmonds declared. After leaving work, he said, they picked up their baby at the home of Mrs. Clark's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.E. (Gene) Adams, who live near the Clark's residence in the Old Joe community.
Funeral services for the family were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Galatia Assembly of God Church with Bro. Oris Vincent officiating. Interment was in the Galatia Cemetery. The McClure Service was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Ralph Parnell, Roe Whitfield, O.D. King, Clrence Havner, Leroy Havner and Deboe Havner.
Clark, the son of George and Dorothy Langston Clark, was born in the Old Joe community on July 29, 1944. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his parents of Old Joe; a brother, Charles of Charleston, SC; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Weaver of Mt. Home and Miss Phyllis Clark of Old Joe; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Lnagston of Old Joe; and a step grandfather, Robert Lucy of Norfork.
Mrs. Clark, born Nov 15, 1945, at Norfork, was the daughter of W.E. and Velma Taylor Adams. She was a member of the Assembly of God Chruch.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include a brother, Billy Adams of Old Joe; six sisters, Mrs. Nelda Speaks of Kansas City, MO, Mrs. Mary Speaks of Kansas City, and Misses Glenna, Gaye, Nadine and Sandra Adams, all of Old Joe; and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Beffal Taylor of Old Joe.
She graduated from Norfork High School in 1964 and her husband had also attend the school. Theri daughter, Rhonda, was born last June 4.
