Junius Beverly “Jack” Dews, Jr., age 85, passed from this life on Thursday, Oct. 20, following a battle with cancer.
He is the son of J.B. “Jack” Dews, Sr. and Mary Miller Dews, both of whom have also gone on to their rewards.
Jack is survived by his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Marie Dews of Camden, and his brother, Joe “Cooter” Dews of Springhill, Louisiana; five children, Karen Breseman of Malvern, Anita Stafford of Camden, Mike Dews and Rhonda of Camden, Randy Stafford and Carmelita of Nashville, Tenn., and Mark Dews and Sharon of Marshall, Texas; seven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews,and his side-kick, Shorty.
He is predeceased by three siblings, Loraine Watson – sister, LaVonne Davis – sister, and Lawrence Edward “Mac” Dews.
Mr. Dews was born Sept. 8, 1931, in Mount Holly, Arkansas. He entered the Naval Reserve in 1948 where he remained until 1957. He then served with the Camden Police Department for 20 years where he retired as a lieutenant. He entered public office when he ran for sheriff of Ouachita County, winning that election and continuing as sheriff for eight years.
Jack is a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Camden. Funeral services will be at First Assembly of God Church on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Greg Sanders officiating. The family will receive friends at Proctor Funeral Home on Monday from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
