SAMPLES, S.P. - Tuesday night about half past ten o'clock Dr. S.P. Samples of West Fork, member of the Pension Board of Medical Examiners at this place, dropped dead in our city upon the platform of the Frisco depot of heart disease. He has been a member of the Pension Board for the past four years and has been a familiar character upon our streets nearly every week during this period. He was in attendance upon the Board Wednesday and had taken his meals at the Renner Hotel. After eating his supper in the early part of the evening he sat in front of the hotel peacefully and quietly smoking a cigar, in which he usually indulged after a repast, intending to leave on the 10:45 train for West Fork. About half past ten, in company with Mr. W.H. Monroe, he left the hotel and went to the depot for this purpose. On their way Mr. Monroe, for some cause, stopped for a few minutes while Dr. Samples went on and ascended the platform. Frank Sevier, being near by, hollowed to Mr. Monroe to come quick, that Dr. Samples had fallen and was dying. Mr. Monroe was soon by the Doctor's side and lifting his head up found that he was indeed in the throes of death, which occurred in a few moments without any apparent struggle. A crowd soon gathered upon the scene and friends at once took charge of the remains, conveyed them to the Arcade Hotel, performed the accustomed duties bestowed upon the dead and placed a watch for the night. When the Southbound train arrived that was to convey the Doctor to his family Conductor Roberson was requested to notify them of the sad death on his arrival at West Fork, which he did. A northbound freight left West Fork soon thereafter and the two sons of the Doctor took passage and was soon at his side, mourning the loss of a kind and affectionate father. Dr. Samples was a member of the G.A.R., Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias, and his remains fell under the tender care of the members of these benevolent orders and was shipped Friday morning on the 10:30 train to West Fork where they were subsequently buried. Be it said to the honor of the dead, he had many friends and but few enemies. He deported himself with that dignity and decorum that commends the gentleman at all times and in all places, and those who knew him best loved him best and will deplore with the deepest sincerity his sudden departure from the rank and file of men. To the afflicted family The News tenders its sympathy.
