James W. Spence "Jay", 88, of Searcy went home to be with Jesus October 16, 2012. He was born November 26, 1923 in Russell, Arkansas to the late James "Bill" and Susan Bell Spence. Jay was a member and deacon of 1st Baptist Church of Floyd. He has said the happiest moment in his life was when he married his wife of 70 years and the next happiest was when they had their two children; God and family were very important to him.
He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Spence; a daughter, Peggy Jean Jones (Jerry) of Thompsonville, Illinois; his son, Jerry Wayne Spence (Glenna) of Searcy; 6 grandchildren, Kent Marshall Jones, Kerry Anne Arview, Christopher Todd Spence, Andrea Annette McKane, Amy Kristin Littleton and Emily Robyn Shaffer; 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Bell Betts and Louise Edom and one brother, Robert Spence; as well as a host of family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Fannie Evelyn Scarbrough and two sisters that died at an early age.
Visitation will be prior to services beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday at 1st Baptist Church of Floyd. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. with Bro. Rodney Rains officiating. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery. Arrangements by Powell Funeral Home of Searcy. www.powellfuneralhome.net
