When John Henry Gracey was born on June 29, 1911, in Batesville, Mississippi, his father, Wayman, was 58 and his mother, Maguline, was 36. He had five brothers and two sisters. He died on October 23, 1971, in Hughes, Arkansas, at the age of 59, and was buried in Forrest City, Arkansas.
