When Elbert Lee Smith was born on June 23, 1895, in Hillsboro, Texas, his father, Robert, was 30 and his mother, Nancy, was 24. He married Thelma Elizabeth Lee on September 12, 1923, in Arkansas. They had four children during their marriage. He died on February 21, 1955, in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 59, and was buried in Lepanto, Arkansas.
