ROGERS — Betty Jean Bradford, 78, of Rogers died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Ashley Health and Rehabilitation in Rogers. She was born April 18, 1933, on Redlands Mesa near Cedaredge, Colo., the youngest of three children born to Charles W. and Jeannettie Jones. She attended school at Redlands Mesa and later in Paonia, Colo.

Betty Jean Jones was married to Lynn K. Bradford on Sept. 22, 1950, in Delta, Colo. They lived in Paonia and Somerset, Colo., until 1952, when they moved to Colorado Springs. After 13 years in Colorado Springs, they moved to Rogers, Ark., where she lived until the time of her death. Five children were born to this marriage, Charles (Chuck), Bruce, Sandra, Terry and Michael.

During her childhood she was known as Betty, but during her high school years she decided to use her middle name and was known as Jean until late adulthood. When her illness caused her to spend time in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, she went back to use of her first name and was called Betty by all of the medical people and all who came to know her at this stage of her life. Her husband of over 60 years had his own private, personal name for her. To him, she was always BJ.

Betty Jean was primarily a stay-at-home mother until the five children were grown. Her work away from home included working at a nursing home and also at a child day care facility, where she could manifest her great love for small children.

But her primary work history was newspaper delivery. In his last years of high school, her son Bruce became the dealer for home delivery of the Tulsa World newspaper in Rogers, Ark. It involved getting up at 3 a.m. every morning and delivering 500 to 600 newspapers all over the city of Rogers and his mother became his work-partner. When Bruce went away to college, she kept the route up by herself to help finance his college costs. She had some part-time help and on rare occasions, she had help from her husband but the bulk of the work was hers. The job was given up after about four years.

For most of her life, Betty Jean was actively involved with Assembly of God Churches in Rogers and Springdale. During her younger years while her children were at home, she was involved with school activities including always being a room mother and she served as PTA president one year. She worked with Cub Scouts and with Brownies and Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and anything else that involved her children.

She worked extensively with ceramics for several years and she enjoyed knitting. Her greatest joys in life were her children and her grandchildren and her greatest sorrow was the death of her son, Terry, at age 15, a sorrow that never left her.

Betty Jean was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Dorothy Robertson; and one son, Terry Lee Bradford.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn Bradford of the home; one sister, Hazel Scheer of Augusta, Ga.; and a brother-in-law, Manley Robertson of Villisca, Iowa. Her surviving children are son Chuck and Teresa Bradford of Cape Girardeau, Mo. and Siloam Springs, Ark., son Bruce Bradford and Libby of West Waltham, Mass., daughter Sandra Hostler and Hobart of Concord, N.C., and son Michael Bradford and Heather of Sammamish, Wash.

She is also survived by grandchildren, Shawna Davis and husband Ricky of Fayetteville, Ark., Brent Bradford and wife Dawn of Sand Springs, Okla., David Hostler of Indianapolis, Ind., and Laurie Hostler of Concord. N.C. Her five great-grandchildren are Lindsey, Lacey, and Logan Davis and Mikayla and Brady Bradford. The other survivor, who was her constant companion when she was at home, is a cat named George.

A time of visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2011, at New Hope Assembly of God Church in Rogers.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at New Hope Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Rogers Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 1034, Rogers, AR 72756.

Service arrangements were made under the direction of Epting Funeral Home in Bentonville, Ark. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.eptingfuneralhome.webs.com.
